United Supermarkets to Eliminate 126 Corporate Roles in 2026 Restructuring

United Supermarkets, a Texas-based subsidiary of Albertsons Cos., plans to lay off 126 corporate associates as part of an operational restructuring set to begin in January.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice obtained by Chron, the reductions could begin as early as January 19th, 2026. The company expects the layoffs to affect multiple director-level roles, as well as positions within its support desk and marketing teams. The restructuring is expected to roll out gradually over several months and conclude around July 2026.

“We will make every effort to place affected team members into alternative positions throughout our organization,” the company stated in the WARN notice. “The restructuring process will be implemented gradually over the coming months, with remaining team members continuing their employment at this location.”

United Supermarkets operates more than 100 stores across Texas and New Mexico under several banners, including United Supermarkets, Albertsons Market, Market Street, Amigos, and United Express. The company employs more than 18,000 associates.

The move follows a series of operational cutbacks by Albertsons Cos. over the past year. In May, the grocer reduced its corporate workforce in Phoenix as part of a long-term strategy to strengthen competitiveness, though the company said no store-level employees were impacted. In September, Safeway announced plans to close 12 stores across Colorado, New Mexico, and Nebraska after consolidating its Intermountain and Denver divisions into a new Mountain West division.

Earlier in 2025, Albertsons also made reductions to its corporate and divisional support staff without disclosing specific figures. In February, the company laid off 156 Safeway corporate employees in Pleasanton, California, according to regulatory filings.

As of September 6th, Albertsons Cos. operated 2,257 retail stores, including 1,720 in-store pharmacies and 405 fuel centers, supported by 22 distribution centers and 19 manufacturing facilities. Based in Boise, Idaho, the company operates across 35 states and the District of Columbia under more than 22 banners.
