Versailles Vacancy: Giant Eagle Exits

On May 31st, 2025, Giant Eagle has closed its North Versailles store at 1701 Lincoln Highway in Pennsylvania, ending nearly 40 years of service to the township. The company described the decision as “difficult, but necessary,” attributing it to business reasons and low sales. The announcement surprised many customers who received text alerts from the pharmacy ahead of time. Giant Eagle has encouraged customers to visit nearby stores in Braddock Hills, McKeesport, Monroeville, and White Oak, and assured pharmacy patrons their prescriptions can be seamlessly transferred.

Team members at the North Versailles location were offered positions at other Giant Eagle stores. Select township residents and employees launched petitions to bring thousands of signatures to a township commissioners meeting, hoping to reverse the closure. At a March 20th public session, employee Karen Ohmann argued the store is “a vital living source in their community,” and highlighted that the chain has served North Versailles since 1985. The final day of operations on May 31st marked the end of an era for North Versailles. With the nearest full-service supermarket now several miles away, local shoppers, particularly seniors and those with limited mobility, face added challenges. As the community grieves the impending loss, questions linger about whether the closure could have been avoided, and what its disappearance will mean for this suburb.
