Whole Foods Market Expands Daily Shop Concept

Whole Foods Market announced plans to expand its smaller-format Whole Foods Market Daily Shop concept to Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia over the next two years, continuing the retailer’s push into dense urban neighborhoods. The company has signed leases in Boston’s Seaport district, Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood and Philadelphia’s South Street corridor.

Designed for convenience and quicker shopping trips, Daily Shop stores offer a curated assortment of fresh produce, meat and seafood, prepared foods, bakery items and 365 by Whole Foods Market products in a smaller footprint. The format also emphasizes grab-and-go meals, pantry staples and products from local and regional suppliers.

“Daily Shop is an important part of how we’re growing our physical store presence,” said Christina Minardi, Vice President of Real Estate and Store Development at Whole Foods Market and Amazon. “As we expand this smaller format into new cities, we’re continuing to deliver the same high standards and carefully curated assortment Whole Foods Market is known for, in a way that meets our customers’ everyday needs.”

The stores are also designed to test new merchandising strategies and layouts aimed at improving navigation and simplifying shopping. “These stores are designed with intention at every level, from layout to assortment,” said Stephanie Curley, Senior Manager of Growth & Innovation at Whole Foods Market and Amazon. “We’re able to introduce new merchandising approaches and fixtures that make it easier for customers to find what they need, while still delivering the quality and discovery they expect from Whole Foods Market.”

Whole Foods Market first launched the Daily Shop concept in New York City in 2024, targeting urban customers seeking faster, more convenient shopping experiences. The concept has since expanded to the New York City metro area, Arlington, Virginia and London. At the time of the announcement, Whole Foods Market operated eight Daily Shop stores, with additional openings planned in both London and the New York market later this year.

The expansion also aligns with Amazon’s broader grocery growth strategy. Whole Foods Market currently operates more than 550 stores across the U.S., Canada and the U.K., with approximately 100 additional locations planned in the coming years. Beyond brick-and-mortar growth, Amazon continues expanding grocery delivery, now serving more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns, including over 2,300 markets with Same-Day Delivery.
