Whole Foods Market Opening Fourth San Diego Location

On September 23rd, San Diego County will welcome its fourth Whole Foods Market location. The downtown opening is part of a much larger expansion plan, with Whole Foods Market expected to add 100 new stores over the next several years to its current footprint of more than 550 locations.

Whole Foods Market’s growth is also contributing to Amazon’s expanding grocery presence. Amazon generated more than $150 billion in gross grocery sales in 2025, making it the second-largest grocer in the U.S., behind Walmart.

Amazon President and CEO Andy Jassy credited Whole Foods Market as an important part of that growth, noting that the retailer continues to out paces similar grocers in markets where it operates, and profitability continues to move in the right direction.

The new Whole Foods Market will be located at 201 West A Street in downtown San Diego, anchoring The Torrey a 34-story, mixed-use development with 450 residences and dedicated parking for both residents and shoppers. At nearly 50,000 square feet, the store will offer the full Whole Foods Market experience, including approximately 1,500 locally sourced products from California vendors.

The San Diego love doesn’t stop there! Additional Whole Foods Market locations are planned for Carmel Mountain Ranch and Encinitas Marketplace. Together, the three new stores will double the retailer’s current San Diego County footprint.

Amazon is also expanding Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, its smaller-format concept designed for dense urban neighborhoods. New Daily Shop locations are planned for Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago over the next two years.

Whole Foods Market has already opened 11 stores in 2026, further demonstrating Amazon’s commitment to growing the banner. The expansion also follows Amazon’s decision to close its physical Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go locations and place a greater focus on Whole Foods Market, smaller-format stores and grocery delivery.
