Whole Foods Market Sets Sights on Two New Small-Format Stores

Whole Foods Market is continuing to expand its presence of small-format stores in New York City with the Whole Foods Market Daily Shop. Following the first Daily Shop in Manhattan’s Upper East Side at 1175 Third Avenue, Whole Foods Market plans to open a second store in Hell’s Kitchen and a third location to follow. A national rollout is also in the works, though specific timelines have not been disclosed.

This innovative store format is designed to cater to the fast-paced lifestyles of urban shoppers, offering a quick, convenient shopping experience while maintaining the high-quality standards for which Whole Foods Market is known. The Daily Shop stores will range between 7,000 and 14,000 square feet, significantly smaller than the typical 40,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market. This reduced footprint makes it easier for the company to establish a presence in dense metropolitan areas where space is at a premium. Despite their smaller size, the Daily Shop locations will still feature a wide array of fresh produce, meat, seafood, and prepared foods, alongside essential grocery items, alcohol, and Whole Foods Market’s private label, 365 by Whole Foods Market. The introduction of the two new stores coincides with the 20th anniversary of Whole Foods Market’s flagship New York City supermarket in Columbus Circle.

Whole Foods Market CEO Jason Buechel emphasized the company’s commitment to growth in New York City, noting that the retailer’s expansion is not only about reflecting on its past success but also about looking forward to future opportunities in a city that has embraced Whole Foods Market. The Hell’s Kitchen location will take over a former Rite Aid drugstore in an area that has seen significant development in recent years. This move is part of a broader strategy by Whole Foods Market and its parent company, Amazon, to innovate and expand their grocery offerings in metropolitan areas, ensuring that customers can conveniently access their favorite products, whether through traditional stores or these new, quick-shop locations. Whole Foods Market’s expansion plans include opening 30 new stores per year, some of which will adopt the Daily Shop format.
