WinCo Foods, the no-frills, warehouse-style grocery chain known for its low prices, has announced plans to open its first stores in Colorado. The employee-owned retailer has secured land in Firestone and is also planning a location in Thornton.
The planned Thornton store is located just a few blocks from a King Soopers, which holds a dominant 36% market share in the Denver area, followed by Walmart. With its entry into the region, WinCo could shake up the local grocery landscape and intensify competition in the market.
Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, WinCo currently operates 114 stores across Arizona, Idaho, California, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Nevada, Texas, and Utah. Its move into Colorado aligns with the company’s rapid expansion strategy – having opened 50 new stores over the past decade. Founded in 1967 as Waremart in the Pacific Northwest, the company later rebranded as WinCo, a name that reflects its guiding philosophy: “Winning Company.”
