2021 posed some obstacles to overcome for many retailers in terms of sales and profitability. As the pandemic continued and brought with it a variety of challenges, 2020 also had a 53 week count that contributed to overall sales comparison. At the close of the fourth quarter, Sprouts reported net sales were down 7% at $1.49 billion. The additional week in 2020 contributed $122 million and when removed from the total sales, net sales were actually up around $12 million.
The total sales for 2021 did show a decrease of about $6.47 billion or 6%. With that said Sprout’s CEO, Jack Sinclair, was happy with the outcome and stated the numbers were better than he had thought given the circumstances.
Sprouts has continued to grow their store account and the markets in which they are a part of. At the close of 2021 Sprouts stores were in 23 states and totaled 374 locations. Sinclair stated that there was a relocation, a remodel and 12 new stores, opened 2 distribution centers and over 5,700 new products were launched in 2021. The expected growth continues as there are more than 80 stores in the pipeline.
